Genuine ▷ Reflected Forms No.1 by Mike Sasaki, 2025 | Wood Sculpture

Reflected Forms No.1 was a spontaneous form inspired by the shape of the wood block. It’s always a pleasure when, after contemplating on the block for a while, the idea emerges that feels just right. The acrylic paint idea came about during the process as a way to increase the visual weight of the concavities. These openings add a certain character to the two similar bodies as well as enhancing the directional visual force. I think the tension between the two parts whilst interconnected instill on the whole form a strong sense of resolution and overall harmony. The movement of the radiating wood grain adds a sense of a soft rhythmic pulsation moving across the surface of the form. The view from the back serves as something of a profile view, where the outline of the entire form becomes the focus—bringing the aspect of wholeness again into the light.

The yellow cedar used for this piece has some naturally occurring bluing marks mainly on the back. The first 6 images were taken in natural window light, the true colour of the piece is best represented in these images. The image with the painted wood base was taken from my phone and the sculpture has a warmer colour appearance. The last two pictures were taken in studio light and the yellow is accentuated.

The piece is signed on the bottom including the year of creation. It is designed for waist to eye level viewing. Finding interesting lighting arrangements is encouraged and leaving adequate space around the object is important for aesthetic purposes. Dust with a soft cloth and keep a reasonable distance from heat sources. It is packed securely in a box for shipment.
